Our Story

Black Boarders CT

My daughter and I went snowboarding once or twice a week during the pandemic; she enjoyed it and got really good! This past season, I decided to enroll her in a multi-week class so she could snowboard with people her age and work with an instructor. When I picked her up after the second class, she seemed bothered, so I asked, “What’s up?” She explained how she felt she didn’t belong – she was a girl and Black… she didn’t identify with the people in her group, all boys, no children of color. Later, she asked me to find a way to get more black kids snowboarding… and here we are!

What is BBCT?

Black Boarders CT is a nonprofit dedicated to increasing access, representation, and belonging in snowboarding for Black and Brown youth. We remove financial, cultural, and logistical barriers by providing gear, instruction, and community-centered experiences on the mountain. Our work is about more than snowboarding alone- it’s about reconnecting youth in outdoor spaces and them experiencing all of the associated discomfort and joy that come along with it.

What is MOMS On The Mountain?

Moms on the Mountain is a Black Boarders CT initiative built to keep youth snowboarding by putting their mothers on boards. When moms ride, they gain confidence, understand the mountain, and move with their kids through the wins and wipeouts. Learning together builds trust, shreds barriers, and makes snowboarding a familial bond—not a one-time experience. By backing and empowering moms, we create a strong, lasting path that keeps Black and Brown youth coming back season after season.
